In this interview, his great-granddaughter Charlotte Junkers talks about how this legacy shapes her personal and entrepreneurial everyday life \u2013 and why the Junkers name is both a responsibility and a source of inspiration for her. The conversation touches on historic aircraft, modern brand management, new products, and the question of how to keep tradition alive without losing sight of the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Junkers name carries enormous historical significance. How does this legacy shape you personally \u2013 and how consciously is it part of your everyday life?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My family\u2019s historical background has certainly shaped me more than I was aware of at the time it was happening. For example, we have always been a family that enjoys lively discussions. At the table with my siblings and my parents, there was never silence \u2013 just as has been passed down about Hugo Junkers, who had 12 children and was an extremely liberal thinker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, especially in everyday business life, the story of Hugo Junkers is not only perceptible in the background, because his name is the one that appears on our products. Hugo Junkers was ahead of his time in so many areas that we can still look to him for guidance today: quality, vision, team spirit, innovative strength \u2026 When in doubt, I sometimes like to ask myself: How would he have done it? What were his principles, and can we apply them to our situation today?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Hugo Junkers\u2019 great-granddaughter, do you feel a particular sense of responsibility or pressure to live up to this name \u2013 especially in your role as Managing Director?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Less so as his great-granddaughter. Pressure is something that never existed in our family. That, too, may go back to Hugo Junkers and his way of treating people with respect and appreciation. But when it comes to the Junkers brand in general, I do feel a great sense of responsibility. I believe that you cannot simply do whatever you like with this name. The product has to align 100% with Hugo Junkers\u2019 principles: to consistently meet the highest standards through quality and, in doing so, serve people in a sustainable way.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n

What, for you, is the special appeal of flying ultralight aircraft \u2013 especially compared with larger aircraft classes?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What particularly excites me about ultralight flying is the combination of freedom, flexibility, and the ability to get into the air relatively easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultralight aircraft play a major role especially in club aviation. They are often less expensive to operate, which makes flying more accessible to many people. They are also perfect when you are flying alone or perhaps with one other person \u2013 so you do not always have to use a larger aircraft. For me, it is precisely this mix of practicality and the flying experience that creates their special appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Junkers light-metal aircraft were technically far ahead of their time. What fascinates you personally most about this history of innovation?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hugo Junkers always had a vision. That was one thing. He was simply able to think further ahead than many others by refusing to accept limitations. But above all, he also knew how to discover and support highly competent people and how to create an environment in which they could deliver the outstanding performance needed to turn such innovative power into reality.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n

What specific role do our aircraft play today in the overall brand identity of Junkers?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They embody the very core. They stand for everything that Junkers wants to represent: flying in its most beautiful form, technically at the cutting edge, and aesthetically still unrivalled today. There is no more beautiful aircraft in this class, and on top of that, Junkers aircraft are technically and qualitatively perfect. They are created by an outstanding team in an impressive manufactory and have the potential to inspire people of all kinds \u2013 whether for aviation, history, or design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From your perspective, who is drawn to the Junkers Aircraft brand today \u2013 and what is it in particular that attracts these people?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is fascinating is that a wide variety of people are enthusiastic about Junkers aircraft. Pilots who follow the ultralight market, of course. Naturally, they immediately took notice because something truly unique in its class had appeared. But it also appeals to other people \u2013 people who may previously not have been interested in aviation at all, but simply have an eye for design and technology, and perhaps also a certain interest in the rich history behind Junkers aircraft, the pioneers of civil aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junkers stands for a very strong tradition. Which markets do you currently find particularly exciting \u2013 especially with regard to the interest in German engineering and aviation history?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are actually hardly any exceptions here. What matters is that we tell the right story: namely, that Junkers stands for civil aviation. When the Second World War broke out and combat aircraft were being developed and built, Hugo Junkers had already been expropriated and had passed away. Hugo Junkers stands for German engineering at the beginning of the 20th century, a period in which Germany was a source of extraordinary innovative strength. Of course, this was not true of Junkers alone, but in aviation he was a dominant force for a long time thanks to his metal aircraft. This story is new and interesting to many people, no matter where they are in the world. It is easy to identify with Junkers quickly if you are interested in any one of these topics: aviation, technology in general, or design. Anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which design or conceptual elements of your watches consciously draw on the aesthetics or technology of the historic aircraft?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, a watch is round and has two or more hands. That makes cockpit instruments an obvious reference, as they used to be round as well and had to be perfectly legible. With our pilot watches, we strongly orient ourselves around this principle. As a distinctive design feature, all of our silver watches, as well as many of the colourful or black models, have a corrugated-metal dial, making it even more immediate to wear Junkers and the fascination of flying on your wrist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In your view, how should the Junkers Aircraft brand position itself in order to remain innovative without losing its historical identity?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is not a contradiction at all \u2013 quite the opposite. If historical identity means acting according to the principles of Hugo Junkers and his company, then innovation is the only way forward. Hugo Junkers worked on new ideas throughout his life. The A60, as a further development of the A50, is one example of how this is put into practice. The A60 is a premium ultralight aircraft that stands out from all other side-by-side ultralights in terms of both appearance and quality. And not least, it has a windshield that can be removed, turning the aircraft into a convertible!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You recently opened a showroom in Munich. What role does such a physical location play in presenting the Junkers brand as a whole?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I almost feel like a digital native myself. At home, I definitely have two of them. But even they, when there is something special to discover and perhaps buy, set out to experience it in person \u2013 to touch it, to try it on.
